DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE
PURPOSE/ACTIVITIES
Department works to provide optimal care for patients with various medical disorders through inpatient, outpatient and speciality clinic facilities. The Department also undertakes undergraduate and postgraduate training, teaching and research.
In addition to providing care to patients with difficult medical problems the department provides specialized services to patients suffering from cardiac aliments, endocrine and metabolic disorders particularly diabetes, kidney diseases, pulmonary problems and intensive medical care to critically ill patients. The department has developed unique facilities in the area of preventive cardiology, endocrinology and nephrology.
The preventive cardiology division has a pedigree profile and sub-clinical atherosclerosis assessment model in young coronary artery disease.A tuberculosis and chest division also provides specialised care to patients with respiratory illness .The division of nephrology provides haemodialysisfacilities and alsocontinuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis facilities for treatment of patients with end-stage renal failure. The endocrine division has a separate endocrinology clinic and twice-weekly diabetes clinics. The Endocrine and Metabolic laboratory has also grown in capacity and infrastructure with procurement of various equipment. Diabetes, Endocrine & Metabolic ward has been started to further strengthen the endocrine services. A dedicated centre for Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic diseases is being constructed to specially cater to patients with these problems. Acentre for nephrology and renal transplant is also being planned.
Intensive care services in the department include the Coronary Care Unit, EndocrineICU and an Intensive Care Area in the Medical Emergency that providescritical carefacilities.
An ART Clinic for HIV/AIDS patients as per NACO guidelines and a weekly tobacco cessation clinic are among the other services provided by the department.
Besides daily and weekly academic programmesDepartment organises several National and International Conferences. The department also been organising popular lecture series on common health problems for the benefit of common people. The lectures are delivered in vernacular language.
The Department is involved in research in several areas including characterization of coronary risk factors, stress and diabetes, diabetes mellitus related macrovascular and microvascular disease, dyslipidaemia in diabetes, genetics of diabetic nephropathy, CAD in chronic renal failure, oxidative stress in stroke and pedigree profile as research tool in young coronary artery disease, and tobacco-related cardiovascular disorders, evaluation of statins in CAD among others.
